Playful edges at the Lackenbach Arboretum, Austria, 3.0 Landscape Architects

Waaay back in the blog's history I did a post about utilizing the edge of a playground as a track for high-energy runners...taking what is essentially a border and making it a functional part of the playground space.   This intriguing edge--fun topography, lit from beneath---surrounds an aboretum, not a playground (though those grasses are incredibly playful!)  but should inspire more useful, purposeful, playful 'edges'.  Why waste what could be playable space?  Have you seen any intriguing edge strategies?

(found at both landzine and vulgare)

  1. Lovely and fun. Any idea what the material is? Stone would be so costly. Perhaps it is colored, textured concrete? And of course, in the US there would need to be a fence outside this edge somewhere...

  2. Aiggh! No fences! :-) But actually they should be treated playfully as well. I'm working on another post about that.

  3. I can't wait to see playful fencing! I never thought about it being playful. What a twist of the mind. I eagerly await that one. I love, love, love these arboretum edges.
